WALSH Ecuador has initiated the 12th round of ravine monitoring at the New Quito International Airport (NQIA). This monitoring has particular importance since the airport will open in February 2013.

WALSH Ecuador is supporting Allied Aviation in the commissioning of the their new Fuel Farm at the NQIA, scheduled to be operational in February 2013.

November 2012 WALSH Ecuador continues to work with Kinross and Ecuadorian goverment authorities on the licensing of the Fruta del Norte project in Southern Ecuador..

WALSH Ecuador has provided technical and GIS support to Atacama Consulting in Kampala, Uganda for licensing of drilling operations in Western Uganda.

  

October 2012 WALSH Ecuador completed a field campaign for ESIAs for drilling pads in Albania for Petromanas. The Quito and Tirana staff completed these documents in record time, submitting at the beginning of December to Albania authorities.  

 

September 2012 WALSH is developing the Updated ESIA for 2D seismic exploration activities in Blocks 2 and 3, Petromanas - Albania,

WALSH is developing a health and safety program, an environmental management plan and an emergency preparedness and response plan for the operational phase of the fuel farm of the New International Airport of Quito (NIAQ).

WALSH was part of the EIA production for 3 oil wells operated by Total in Uganda.

June 2012 WALSH is planning the Eleventh Biannual Biological and Hydrological Monitoring Study of the Ravines Surrounding the New Quito International Airport - Dry Season. The study is scheduled for July 2012.

WALSH is supporting Allied Aviation in their transition to Operation at the NQIA (New Quito International Aiport).

WALSH is preparing the TORs for the Audit of the Fuel Farm at the NQIA as it approaches the change to operation phase. WALSH continues with the monitoring of the construction phase.

April 2012 In response to revisions made by the Ministry of Environment, WALSH sumbitted changes to the Audit of Social and Environmental Compliance for Production Activities of Oil and Pipeline in Repsol Block 16.



March 2012 WALSH made a marketing visit to Uganda to discuss new environmental projects in that country.

WALSH concluded a mine sector evaluation of Ecuador for a US client.

WALSH continues HES oversight of the Allied Fuel Farm at the New Quito International Airport, and prepares for change of phase to operation as the airport approaches testing and opening.

WALSH Ecuador was awarded ESIA work in Uganda and Albania.



February 2012 WALSH conducted a baseline study for a potential quarry in southern Ecuador. Walsh employed a high resolution GPS to locate newly developed low impact field monuments for remote cloud forest environments.

WALSH submitted the 10th biodiversity monitoring report of the ravines at the New Quito International Airport in Spanish and English to the Ministry of Environment.

The WALSH EIA for production at the Ecuacorrientes Mirador mine site was licensed, the first large scale industrial mine in Ecuador.



January 2012 WALSH finished a draft IFC ESIA for a mining client in southern Ecuador.



December 2011 WALSH Ecuador completed three exploratory Exploratory Drilling ESIAs in Albania for client Petromanas Albania GmbH in compliance with Albanian environmental licensing requirements.

WALSH completed fieldwork for the Tenth Biannual Biological and Hydrological Monitoring Study of the Ravines Surrounding the New Quito International Airport - Wet Season.

WALSH Ecuador submitted the Socio-Environmental Compliance Audit report for oil production activities and a pipeline in Repsol Block 16. This audit was conducted in accordance with the new requirements established by the Environmental and Social Reparation Program (PRAS) of the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment, including an evaluation and quantification of environmental and social liabilities through an updated baseline assessment.



November 2011 WALSH Ecuador is developing a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the Fruta del Norte Mining Project, client Kinross Aurelian SA. This evaluation will help guide project design and develop action plans so that environmental and social management is consistent with best practices in the industry, including systems for: risk and impact management, labor management, pollution prevention, community health and safety, and protection of biodiversity, indigenous peoples, vulnerable demographics, and cultural resources.



October 2011 WALSH Ecuador completed the final drafts of exploitation and beneficiation EIAs for the Fruta del Norte Gold Mine Project for client Kinross Aurelian SA to submit to the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment.



September 2011 WALSH completed fieldwork for three Exploratory Drilling ESIAs in Albania for Petromanas Albania GmbH. Walsh specialists worked with Albanian counterparts to conduct physical, biological and socioeconomic baseline studies at six proposed well locations across Albania.


WALSH conducted an environmental baseline study of the ATO mineral concession in Eastern Mongolia. The project involved surface water, groundwater, soil, geomorphology, landscape, vegetation, wildlife, and community characterization. Special attention was given to herds of sensitive Mongolian gazelles, scarce groundwater, nuurs, herders, and livestock. 



August 2011 WALSH completed fieldwork for the Ninth Biannual Biological and Hydrological Monitoring Study of the Ravines Surrounding the New Quito International Airport - Dry Season.



July 2011 WALSH completed field work for the public participation and consultation of the Fruta del Norte EIAs in the province of Zamora Chinchipe. Walsh gave four public presentations, including one in the Shuar language, and maintained four consultation offices open for 20 days.

The Exploitation Phase EIA for the Mirador Copper Mining Project was approved by the Ministry of the Environment. WALSH Ecuador prepared this EIA on behalf of client Ecuacorriente SA. It was the first large scale open-pit mining exploitation EIA prepared in Ecuador under the new mining law (2009).



 

June 2011 WALSH submitted the final draft of the Addendum to the EIA and EMP for the New Quito International Airport.



May 2011 Walsh completed the draft EIAs for the Fruta del Norte mining project for submittal to the Ministry of the Environment.



April 2011 The report for the 8th round of biodiversity monitoring at ravines of the New Quito International Airport was completed, with similar results from previous monitoring campaigns conducted during construction.  The ravines remain an important conservation objective for the airport.



March 2011 Walsh has completed a review of the Gaia Certification Standard (www.gaiacertified.com), the world's first voluntary certification system for oil and gas exploration and production.

Walsh baseline teams have completed field data collection for the Fruta Del Norte Mine EIAs.



February 2011 Mark Thurber and Sebastian Valdivieso finished fieldwork for the EIA Walsh is elaborating for WAHA Oil Company in Libya.

WALSH Ecuador successfully completed the 8th biannual biological and hydrological monitoring study of the ravines that surround the New Quito International Airport. The fieldwork for this study was conducted in the December 2010 dry season



December 2010
Walsh Ecuador conducted a baseline study for Waha Petroleum Company in Libya, which involved over 2000km of travel in remote desert environments. The team will be working with the Libyan Petroleum Institute to produce an Environmental Impact Assessment and management plan.

WALSH-Ecuador submitted the Environmental Impact Assessment and Management Plan for the Development and Production Phase of the Edén Alto area in Block 15 to the Ministry of the Environment and the client (Petroamazonas Ecuador S.A.).



October2010 David Atkins, an international expert in water resources and mine site impact assessments, will work with the Walsh Quito to provide technical assistance in Ecuador.



September 2010 WALSH Ecuador successfully completed the Seventh Biannual Biological and Hydrological Monitoring Study of the Ravines Surrounding the New Quito International Airport - Dry Season.
 
A WALSH Ecuador management team had the opportunity to visit the Buckhorn Mine and Mill in Republic, Washington, USA, which will help WALSH develop best practices for mining in Ecuador.
 

 
August 2010 Walsh-Ecuador was awarded an EIA/EMP for the Development and Production Phase of the Edén Alto Area, Block 15, for PetroAmazonas, Ecuador S.A.
 


June 2010 The WALSH Ecuador team is collaborating with WALSH USA on an EIA for oil and gas development in a desert environments in Oman.
 
The WALSH Ecuador team is producing an ESIA in Yemen for development drilling and production in central Yemen.
 
We are considering a ESIA scoping process for a mine for a confidential client in Southern Ecuador.
 


May 2010 The GIS group at WALSH will be teaming with EarthEye to provide several LiDAR products to a mining client in southern Ecuador.
 


April 2010 Walsh-Ecuador was awarded an EIA for a mining client in southern Ecuador which will include development of mineral deposit, milling, concentrate and tailing dam.

WALSH-Ecuador obtained the Environmental License for Allied Aviation's Fueling Facility at the New Quito International Airport.

The archeological group at WALSH-Ecuador is working on an important archeological investigation in the Province of Zamora-Chinchipe.




March 2010 Walsh-Ecuador staff is participating in a EIA for a gas and condensate project in arid dune and sabkha environment in western Oman. The Quito GIS department is mapping complex dune features from high-resolution satellite imagery.

February 2010 Walsh Ecuador and our main office in Boulder, CO were granted an EIA for a seismic project in Oman.


January 2010 General Manager Mark Thurber led a group of Univeristy of Puget Sound undergraduate geology majors on field trip in Ecuador. Their visit to a 2008 lava flow at Reventador was featured on the Rite-in-the-Rain.



December 2009 WALSH conducted this anthropological study of the indigenous Shuar and Saraguro populations near the Fruta del Norte (FDN) mining project. WALSH developed an ethnographic baseline of traditional Shuar and Saraguro resource use and ritual practices, and then conducted a field study to identify sacred spaces and areas of traditional use in the FDN project area. Eight sacred waterfalls were identified through interviews with Shuar from the area, and traditional Shuar hunting and gathering paths and areas were mapped using field data and high-resolution satellite imagery.

Walsh conducted the field phase of the Sixth Biological and Hydrological Biannual Monitoring of the Ravines that surround the New Quito International Airport (NQIA). The technical team is sampling and monitoring water bodies, flora and fauna of the Guambi River and Guayllamba River Ravines.




November 2009 Walsh successfully completed the Fifth report of the Biological and Hydrological Biannual Monitoring of the Ravines that surround the New Quito International Airport (NQIA) - Dry Season.  The Biannual Monitoring Studies have been carried out since December 2007, in order to assess the potential impacts of the NQIA construction activities to the biological and hydrological environmental components of the ravines.



October 2009 Walsh delivered to the client the final report in October, of the (EIA/EMP) for the Construction and Operation of a Radio System to Assist Aircraft Approach (DVOR) to the New Quito Airport, which will be located south of NQIA. The EIA/EMP helped to identify the potential impacts of the construction and operation of the DVOR to the environmental components, and established specific mitigation measures.
